Hands without gloves, gloves without hands (2026)
Size: 66cm x 30cm x 7cm
Material: Glazed ceramic
This piece draws upon On Absence by Clare Proctor, in particular the line ‘a glove without a hand on a fencepost’. The carving on the hands is based on photos I took of cats stuck in a tree, looking downwards, wanting to jump into the gloves. And the gloves have elements that make them more bodily than just an inanimate object. They have fingernails and a deep red, almost blood-like, glaze on the inside. Both the hands and the gloves long for each other or trace back to a time when they were connected. The piece sits in a suspended moment where that longing is held.
