Grandchild (2026)
Size: 35cm x 16cm x 17cm
Material: Ceramic
Much of the On Absence project touches on intergenerational themes. I guess it’s inescapable when working with old family photos. With this sculpture, I’m thinking about what is passed on down the family line and about touch. The carved image is taken from a photograph of my great grandmother and great grandfather sitting side by side. Their hands positioned on their separate laps and not touching. These same hands come together into a single lap on Grandchild’s thighs. To me, Grandchild seems to have a wisdom and calm that is beyond his years. He is being carried by and carrying the previous generations within him.
It was significant that the person was a grandchild rather than a child. Not sure if I can articulate why, but it’s about things that are passed on beyond the immediate parent-child relationship.
